Spiritual addiction recovery

This article will outline specific strategies of how to magnify God in the process of spiritual healing as well as finding Biblical help for addiction. Practical methods will be detailed that can be immediately applied to everyday living for successful recovery from addiction and development of an intimate relationship with your Heavenly Father. And we invite your questions, comments and experience with the Bible and drugs, alcohol, or behavioral addictions as well as addiction recovery at the end.

Magnify God, not the addiction

The next step of spiritual healing from addiction is to magnify God, not your addiction. When the urge to (FILL IN THE BLANK) tries to take over, let God take over. How do you do this? Put your focus on Him. Praise Him and He shows up.

I know – this is the last thing you feel like doing when you just want to feed an addiction – but your spirit needs to be fed with God. He is a spirit being. He is your creator and your Heavenly Father. Your spirit yearns for Him. You are a spirit with a body, not a body with a spirit. Your flesh is trying to stay in control, but you CAN win this battle!

I will say it again. Praise Him and He shows up.

God inhabits the praises of His people. (Psalms 22:3)

David, the king of Israel in the Old Testament, knew this and He commissioned a continuous praise team. David was a mighty warrior and conquered Goliath. You may not realize it yet, but you are also a mighty warrior and can conqueror the Goliath of addiction when you surrender to God. God is the Commander-in-Chief of the battle you are now engaged in.

When you are under His command, you WILL be more than a conqueror. (Romans 8:37)

Praise God regardless of how you feel. When you praise Him, the atmosphere shifts. Sing hymns to Him. Put on praise and worship music. All of these techniques will help elevate your spirit and your flesh will take a back seat. Make this a lifestyle – not just something that you do on occasion or when you are having a tough time. Addiction is warfare and you need preemptive strategies to win the battle.

God promises that when we keep our minds focused on Him, He will keep us in perfect peace. (Isaiah 26:3)

Peace is the desire of your heart. Your peace has been robbed and your spirit has been quenched because of the effects of the addiction. The lifestyle that resulted from this tragic disease led you down a road that was not part of God’s plan for you. God says,

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV).\

Spiritual addiction treatment

When you get a deep revelation of how much God loves you and that He wants the very best for you, trusting Him and letting Him take control, not only becomes, easy, it becomes necessary. When you review the shambles of your broken life, you reconcile yourself to the fact, that you NEED Him. Only He has the power to completely deliver you. He created you to establish His kingdom and glorify Him. That can only be done when you are fulfilling His plan for your life. He wants to deliver you more than you want to be delivered.

  1. I’m caught between my addiction and the will to be free from it. But today I choose to be free. Now this is my choice, not anyone elses. I pray I can continue to make this happen. Staying clean is my will, but at times I falter, but I will win if I stay focused

  2. Nobody has ever provided any evidence that any gods, much less a specific god, exist. People believe in specific gods because of indoctrination from an early age, tradition, apophenia, hallucinations, fear of torture (for gods sadistic enough to threaten it) and other similarly illogical reasons. But no gods exist in reality; these are all stories, created for people who were scared of the world long before we understood it. Now we have no more reason for these superstitions.

And religious belief has caused more misery than any other idea throughout history.

  3. Hi Grace. The enemy will use every tactic possible, including distractions by overloading God’s children with work. Your husband HAS to make God the priority. He needs to schedule Him into his daily activities. It is possible even with a busy schedule to find time for Him. Your husband can wake up fifteen minutes earlier or go to sleep fifteen minutes later so that he has time to speak with God. He can spend time with Him while he waits in traffic. That would be a lot better than feeling stressed over the frustration of wasted time as you creep along. He can take his lunch to the park and talk to Him while out in nature, which is my favorite way to connect with Him. Your husband could go and sit in his car while on a work break, and talk with God. If he does these things, he will be amazed how his life will change as his intimacy with God grows. He also needs to saturate himself with God’s word. Keep the radio station tuned to gospel music or play gospel CD’s. Gospel music is composed of God’s word. Have gospel music playing in your home. Make your home a sanctuary and speak Jesus’ name frequently. The enemy runs like a scalded rat when you speak His powerful name. Pray that God surrounds you, your husband, your home, your computers, your television with an encampment of angels and covers you with the blood of Jesus Christ.

Have your husband speak the Aaronic blessing over the both of you. If he won’t do it, then you do it. IT CHANGES LIVES! The Aaronic blessing is a great declaration to speak over yourself and your family. God instructed Moses to tell Aaron to speak this blessing over his sons (Numbers 22–27). This not only continues to be a current Jewish tradition, but many pastors also speak this over their congregation. Remember that God is not a respecter of persons, but what is meant for one of His children is meant for all. This is the Aaronic blessing:
‘The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”

God tells us when we speak this we will be blessed: “And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them” (Numbers 6: 23–27, KJV). SPEAK IT GRACE! IT HAS WORKED MIRACLES! THE INSTRUCTION TO SPEAK THIS BLESSING IS FROM GOD’S OWN LIPS!

Memorizing a few favorite scriptures and speaking them through the day is a powerful weapon to combat the enemy. When you speak God’s word, you become a verbal partner with Him and this becomes a weapon of mass destruction and creative construction. Here are some verses to get him started:

John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

James 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

The enemy uses addiction, which is a type of idolatry, so that it distracts us from God and His purpose for our lives. God tells us in the book of Isaiah how much more He can do for us than anything else in life that has become our god, which is found in the following passage:

““Present the case for your idols,”
    says the Lord.
“Let them show what they can do,”
    says the King of Israel.[a]
22 “Let them try to tell us what happened long ago
so that we may consider the evidence.
Or let them tell us what the future holds,
so we can know what’s going to happen.
23 Yes, tell us what will occur in the days ahead.
Then we will know you are gods.
In fact, do anything—good or bad!
Do something that will amaze and frighten us.
24 But no! You are less than nothing and can do nothing at all.
Those who choose you pollute themselves.” (Isaiah 41:21–24, KJV, emphasis added).
The idols that fill our spare time are utterly worthless and can destroy us. This is clearly evident when compared to all the blessings you will receive when you spend time with the one and only true, living God, and receive all of the good things that He has planned for you. Pray that your husband will get a revelation of this truth.

You and your husband need to speak to the addiction, not about it, which just magnifies the problem instead of God. Addiction is a demonic spirit that controls people. You need to rebuke it: Speak the following: “I rebuke all spirits of addiction and demand that they leave by the blood of Jesus Christ. I call forth the power that the Holy Spirit has placed in me and command healing, wholeness and prosperity over all areas of my life. I step boldly to the throne of grace and demand restoration from the enemy. Father you have promised in your word that when the enemy takes from me he has to restore to me sevenfold”

God tells us to keep Him in remembrance. I do this frequently and have gone from living in a pit to living a life of abundance. God bless you always. Keep praying and speaking God’s word over both of you!

Please let me know how you are both doing. I am praying for you both!
